It Takes a Village: How Adult Advocates Can Support STEM Interest @ Home




Course Description 
Many parents, teachers and youth advocates struggle to provide girls access to quality experiences in STEM. Parents of English Language Learners encounter additional barriers to accessing STEM resources. These issues are especially prevalent during a global pandemic. This course will provide adults with information, resources and best practices to support and encourage girls' interest in engineering and STEM careers – both in-person and virtual.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
  • Recognize external barriers to getting girls involved in STEM.
  • Identify strategies that parents can implement to support STEM interest in a virtual environment.
  • Identify extracurricular programs that encourage STEM-interested girls.

Dr. Claudia Galván is a technology executive in California's Silicon Valley, she has led development teams at Oracle, Adobe, and Microsoft reaching billions of people around the world. Lately, she has focused on advising technology companies expanding around the world. Dr. Galván is researching how to increase the number of women and minorities in engineering and computer science. She has worked with parents, teachers, and children for the past 15 years teaching programming.
