Inclusive Outreach: A Guide to Engaging Underserved Youth in STEM




Course Description 
This course provides a short introduction to engaging underserved youth in outreach efforts. SWE members will learn techniques to connect with underrepresented students, gain background knowledge on biases these students face and learn strategies for actively combat bias.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
  • Recognize common biases against underrepresented youth and their effect
  • Understand strategies for actively combating biases against underrepresented youth.
  • Execute appropriate communication techniques for working with underrepresented youth and best practices for engaging these students in STEM.

Speakers
Samantha Balistreri is a mechanical engineering master’s student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and served as the FY22 Society Outreach Committee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Outreach work group lead. In this role she led her team in the research and development of social media content relating to DEI and K-12 outreach. She has a passion for adult advocate training as well as the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities in STEM.

Maddy Best is a Continuous Improvement Engineer at Post Consumer Brands in Minnesota. She was a FY22 member of the Society Outreach Committee-D&I in Outreach work group and the FY23 work group lead. As the lead of this committee, she enjoys developing creative ways to show others the connections between K-12 Outreach and DE&I. She is passionate about creating accessible learning resources for people at all levels of outreach experience.

Tracy Goldman is a Software Engineer based out of New York City working for HBO Max. She graduated from Cornell University in 2020 with a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Creative Writing. She was an active member of SWE for all of her undergraduate years and the 2020 and 2021 fiscal years. She was also a FY22 member of the Society DE&I in Outreach work group member.
